Koine Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and Koine, Konstantinou Kanari 10, Greece ("Koine", "we", "us"). By creating an account or using Koine, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

1. What Koine is

Koine is a messenger built around one idea: speak naturally, and we'll deliver your intention. When you message someone in a normal conversation, our servers process your message with AI translation providers so the recipient receives it in their language, with your meaning preserved as faithfully as we can manage.

Two things you should understand about how this works:

• AI processing of normal conversations. Message text in normal conversations is sent to third-party AI providers (such as Anthropic, OpenAI, or DeepL) to produce translations, and the translated results are stored and delivered. This is core to the service — it is how normal conversations work. Details are in our Privacy Policy.
• The intention-preservation promise is best-effort. We design the system to preserve what you meant — tone, commitments, numbers, names, negations — across languages. We work hard at this and we're proud of the results, but translation is performed by AI and we cannot guarantee it is accurate, complete, or faithful in every case. See Section 8.

Koine also offers Private chats, which are end-to-end encrypted. We route only ciphertext for these, we cannot read them, and they are never AI-processed or translated by us. Because we cannot read them, we also cannot translate, restore, or recover them for you.

Other features include media sharing, stories (which auto-delete after 24 hours), voice channels with optional live captions (captions are processed like normal messages), contact discovery via hashed phone numbers, and push notifications.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old to use Koine. By creating an account you confirm that you are 16 or older. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 16, we will delete it.

You must also be legally capable of entering into these Terms and not barred from using the service under applicable law.

3. Your account

• You sign in with your phone number, verified by an SMS one-time code. You are responsible for keeping your phone number and devices secure; anyone who can receive SMS at your number and access your device can access your account.
• Keep your account information accurate. One account per person; don't create accounts by automated means or on behalf of others without authority.
• You can delete your account at any time in-app (Settings → Account → Delete account). Deletion is permanent and removes your data as described in the Privacy Policy.
• We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms (see Section 6).

4. Acceptable use

Koine is for genuine communication between people. You must not use it to:

• harass, threaten, intimidate, or abuse anyone, or encourage others to do so;
• send spam, scams, phishing, malware, or bulk unsolicited messages;
• post or share content that is illegal in Greece, the EU, or your jurisdiction — including child sexual abuse material (zero tolerance; reported to authorities), terrorist content, or content infringing others' rights;
• impersonate any person or entity, or misrepresent your affiliation;
• attempt to break, probe, overload, or circumvent our security, rate limits, encryption, or usage caps (including the free-tier translation cap);
• scrape, harvest, or collect other users' data;
• interfere with other users' enjoyment of the service;
• use the service to violate export controls or sanctions.

Moderation and reports

Users can block and report other users and content. We review reports and may remove content, restrict features, or suspend/terminate accounts that violate these Terms. Private chats are end-to-end encrypted and we cannot read them; reports about private chats are handled on the basis of what the reporting user submits to us. We may preserve and disclose information where required by valid legal process.

5. Your content and our license

You own your content. Messages, media, stories, and profile information you create remain yours. We claim no ownership.

To run the service, you grant us a limited, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, cache, reproduce, process (including AI translation of normal conversations), transmit, and display your content — solely as needed to operate, provide, and improve the service and only for as long as the content remains on the service. This license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for (a) content you shared with others that they retain copies of, and (b) records we must keep by law.

We do not use your content for advertising and we do not sell it.

You are responsible for the content you send. Make sure you have the rights to share what you share.

6. Suspension and termination

We may suspend or terminate your account if you materially or repeatedly violate these Terms, if we are required to by law, or if your use creates risk or harm to us or other users. Where reasonable, we will notify you and give you a chance to respond or export your data — but we may act immediately for serious violations (e.g. illegal content, security attacks).

You may stop using Koine and delete your account at any time.

7. Koine Premium and credits

Koine's core messaging is free. The free tier includes up to 40 outbound translations per day.

Koine Premium removes the daily cap and unlocks premium features, priced at US$6.99/month or US$49.99/year (local pricing and taxes may vary by store and country). Credit packs are one-time purchases of additional translation credits.

• Billing. On the web, payments are processed by Stripe; on mobile, by the Apple App Store or Google Play (managed via RevenueCat). We never see your card number.
• Renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period until cancelled.
• Cancellation. Cancel any time: via your App Store / Google Play subscription settings (mobile) or via your Stripe-managed billing portal (web). Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period; you keep Premium until then.
• Refunds. Purchases made through the App Store or Google Play are subject to that store's refund policy — request refunds from the store. For web purchases, contact us at info@koineapp.com; statutory refund rights under EU consumer law apply. By starting a subscription with immediate access, you acknowledge that the EU 14-day withdrawal right for digital services may be affected once performance begins, to the extent permitted by law.
• Price changes. We will notify you in advance of price changes; they take effect at your next renewal, and you may cancel before then.
• Unused credits have no cash value and expire when the account is deleted.

8. Disclaimers — read this section

• Translations are AI-generated and may be wrong. Despite our best efforts to preserve intent, translations may contain errors, omissions, or shifts in meaning. Do not rely on Koine translations for legal, medical, financial, safety-critical, or emergency communications. When precision matters, verify with a qualified human translator.
• The service is provided "as is" and "as available." To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
• We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure, or that content will never be lost. Keep copies of anything important.
• We are not responsible for the conduct or content of other users, though we act on violations we become aware of (Section 4).
• Nothing in this section limits rights you have as a consumer under EU or Greek law that cannot be limited by contract.

9. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law:

• We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or loss of profits, data, goodwill, or business opportunities, arising from your use of the service — including damages arising from translation errors or misunderstandings between users.
• Our total aggregate liability for all claims relating to the service is limited to the greater of (a) the amounts you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose, or (b) €50.

These limits do not apply to: liability for intent or gross negligence, death or personal injury, or any other liability that cannot be excluded under Greek or EU law. Statutory consumer rights remain unaffected.

10. Indemnity

If you use the service in violation of these Terms or applicable law and that causes a third-party claim against us, you agree to indemnify us for reasonable losses and costs arising from that claim, to the extent permitted by applicable consumer law.

11. Changes to the service and these Terms

We are actively developing Koine; features may change, be added, or be withdrawn. If we make material changes to these Terms, we will notify you in-app at least 15 days before they take effect (immediately for changes required by law or urgent security reasons). If you continue using Koine after the changes take effect, the new Terms apply. If you don't agree, delete your account before the effective date.

12. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of Greece and applicable European Union law. Disputes are subject to the jurisdiction of the competent courts of Greece — except that if you are a consumer residing in the EU, you retain the right to bring proceedings in your country of residence, and mandatory consumer-protection rules of your country still apply. The European Commission's Online Dispute Resolution platform is available at https://ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr.

13. Miscellaneous

• If a provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest remain in effect.
• Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver.
• You may not assign these Terms; we may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, with notice to you.
• These Terms plus the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between us regarding the service.
